Joyner Lucas - ADHD ALBUM REVIEW

Joyner Lucas has been catching people’s eyes for nearly a decade. After breaking out onto the scene with his 2015 track “Ross Capicchoni,” Lucas caught my attention with his flows and impeccable pen game. He went up from there with his music video “I’m Not Racist,” which gave a spotlight to race relations from the perspectives of a black man and a white man. This was a powerful video that eventually got nominated for a Grammy. In 2018, he was now known to millions because of the sole rap feature on Eminem’s surprise album Kamikazee. The song, “Lucky You,” showcased that Lucas was an Eminem protegee that could go nearly bar to bar with Marshall Mathers himself. He had gotten Eminem’s blessing, but where was his debut album? ADHD is that album, and sadly, it isn’t that pretty.

First off, he sounds like he’s copying different artists on songs. In the song “Finally,” he sounds exactly like Drake. If you played this song without the knowledge of the artist, you’d just think it’s Drake and Chris Brown horribly trying to replicate “No Guidance.” Oh yeah, he sounds like Chris Brown too, who is featured on the song. On many different tracks, he sounds like a shitty Ty Dolla $ign rip off. There is absolutely no originality on this record. It’s painful. Also, do you know how many singles there were off this album? Nine. Nine singles from 2018 to 2020. There are also horribly written skits about mental health and the therapist giving Joyner cocaine instead of doing his job, which is dissecting his mental health issues. Also, the album is called ADHD. These skits (and none of the songs while I'm at it) have to do with ADHD, and I find that strange. Kevin Hart and Chris Tucker are on here too, for some godawful reason.

Where is the one thing that made Joyner impressive to me? Where the hell is his good writing? Better yet, where is ANY writing? Lucas goes on for so long without any wordplay or even anything clever that ADHD as a whole is just so boring to listen to. It gets even worse with the extremely generic production as well! I guess if I have to name the best songs, one of them has to be “ISIS.” Out of this crop of songs, “ISIS” is most likely the banger of the bunch, if people even remember it within the next few months. I also have to give credit to “Will” for talking about having positive role models and such, but the constant Will Smith callbacks bog down the song, even if it offers some witty references.

Joyner Lucas has lost all potential in my eyes. He went heavily mainstream on this record, and his career will suffer for it. It really sucks for me to say this, honestly. Lucas just needs a full re-do. Writing, production, and even some of his music videos for this record are disturbingly bad for a rapper of his talent.

If you think about it, Lucas was so focused on this album, it’s pretty funny that this is called ADHD.

2/10

That’s an ugly ass cover too, by the way.
