The hoodie with this cover on it is incredible. Ada Rook has been on my radar for a while now. Even if I haven’t covered her solo work just yet, I’ve covered some of her work already. She was one half of the duo Black Dresses, which I’ve reviewed their last two albums, and she mastered Backxwash’s last album I LIE HERE BURIED WITH MY RINGS AND MY DRESSES . Ever since this project’s been announced, it’s been one of my most anticipated releases of this year. Dorian Electra is an artist that’s increasingly impressed me since they’ve burst onto the scene. Their 2019 debut album, Flamboyant , was something I more appreciated than enjoyed, but last year’s immensely horny My Agenda really shot them into the stratosphere in my mind. To me, they’re the reigning ruler of hyperpop right now. Hell, their remix of Lady Gaga’s “Replay” is one of the damn best songs of the year. Now, we have a new expansion to My Agenda , which includes a slew of remixes, new versions, and even brand new songs recorded during the My Agenda sessions. Let’s get into my thoughts on it. No, I’m not going to score this a 2.5/10 because it’s the mixtape title. I’m gonna be honest, Aminé came out of nowhere to me last year. I always knew his name for the “Caroline” single from a few years back, but it just didn’t really appeal to me that much at the time. Last year, that really changed with his last album, Limbo . That project was one of the biggest and best surprises of 2020 to me and there are quite a few tracks from it still in my playlist over a year after its release. Hell, I’ll stand by the fact that it’s one of the best albums of that year. Now, continuing with his release pattern of album-mixtape, we now have the mixtape, the aptly titled TWOPOINTFIVE . If nightcore gets a resurgence because of this album, I won’t know what to feel anymore. I have a fun history with Lady Gaga on this site. One of my earlier reviews was Gaga’s last studio album, Chromatica , and at the time, I was one of the only people in the middle of it. So many people thought it was either her best album or her worst album ever. I was so tempted to put this review out on Friday, but that’d be too easy. Ah, yes. 2011. The Harry Potter film franchise concluded, Adele was everywhere, and we lost Amy Winehouse and Nate Dogg. Oh, and a little group called Death Grips formed. A decade can be a very long time for anything to evolve, whether it comes to films or especially music. One of the most infectious songs of the early 2010s, for better or for worse, was Rebecca Black’s “Friday.” Now that’s stuck in your head, so I’ll try and get through it. There’s a reason why that song is so hated, mainly because it has the fundamental workings of a ‘perfect’ pop song. I know that’s a hot take, shut up, but either way, it seems like it had a pretty negative impact on Black’s personal life as she went mostly quiet when it came to her music. I’m aware this came out a while ago, and yes I’m reviewing it now. Black Dresses aren’t a band. They aren’t one anymore, at least. In 2020, the duo consisting of Ada Rook and Devi McCallion dropped their breakout album, Peaceful as Hell . It was a noisy, ‘not-for-everyone,’ and dizzying album that sounded nothing like it. Then, it was gone. Not long after it was released, Rook and McCallion ended Black Dresses, mainly having to do with harassment from fans. The rest of their music also got taken off of streaming services, and you can only find their stuff on the group’s Bandcamp page. Even though they aren’t working as Black Dresses anymore, though, that doesn’t mean that new music has seen the light of day. This past Valentine’s Day, Forever in Your Heart was released onto the internet with no fanfare. It was essentially plopped into the laps of their fans, erratic or not. Thank 100 gecs for introducing me to Dorian Electra. For those that don’t know, Dorian Electra is, to me, one of the innovators of the relatively new genre of hyperpop. It’s one of the more zany types of music, but there’s also a deep amount of creativity that I’ve been appreciating a lot more. 100 gecs introduced me to this sound, and artists like Charli XCX and Kero Kero Bonito have also taken their careers into this direction. I’d also like to mention that Dorian Electra is one of the first artists that have taken this sound into the stratosphere. They aren’t worried to get weird and experimental in an already weird and experimental genre. Their debut album Flamboyant is pretty great, while I haven’t covered it here just yet. This is their second album, My Agenda . The biggest features here are pretty eclectic as well.
