Pretty sure I gotta learn how to skateboard to listen to this now. The 2000s were truly something else. I was too young to remember a little of it, but there are a couple things that stand out. Since nostalgia typically goes back for two decades, it seems like 2000s style is coming back, especially in the music. We have the good stuff like WILLOW’s last album, and we have the bad stuff like nearly everything Machine Gun Kelly has done within the past two years. One artist that seemed prime for a *huge* career resurgence is Avril Lavigne, where her songs like “Complicated” and “Sk8er Boi” have been etched into the style so much that it’s become that style. Lavigne seems to know this since we have her return to that 2000s pop-punk sound with Love Sux . I haven’t heard any of the singles beforehand, but with MGK and blackbear as features on this, it’s not like I have that high of expectations to begin with. Let’s just get into it. No, this is not a Christmas album. I love finding new artists, and honestly, I didn’t find this group off of Twitter or social media. I actually heard of them through word of mouth. I don’t know a lot about Sleigh Bells, but they’re an alt-rock duo from Brooklyn and this is their fifth album as a duo. I haven’t heard their other albums, but I do know that one of them is called Jessica Rabbit , so that’s a plus. This album’s called Texis , and I honestly don’t know what else to say about it. Let’s just listen to it. Alright, I’ve spent a couple minutes trying my best to figure out how to describe the sound of it, so I’m gonna do it, even if it’s a little clunky: metal-influenced layers mixed with rap beats and R&B vocals. There’s also a bit of electronic and industrial music in here too, and I think that this is one of the more unique albums to drop this year. If this is the 2000s pop-punk revival, I’m down for it. If you don’t know who Willow is, I mean, come on. Willow Smith is the daughter of Will Smith and brother of Jaden Smith. Granted, it’s been a hot minute since I’ve kept up with her music. I know she has a self-titled album from a few years back, but I haven’t heard it. Why? Because this would apparently have a completely different sound here: The pop-punk sound of the 2000s that was (personally) perfected by Avril Lavigne. Switching from conscious R&B to this seems pretty risky, but Willow seems like she’s confident in this. lately i feel EVERYTHING is Willow’s second album and features contributions from blink-182’s Travis Barker, Ayla Tesler-Mabe, Tierra Whack, Cherry Glazerr, and the aforementioned Avril Lavigne. This might be the best time to say that this album proves Olivia Rodrigo isn’t an industry plant. Before 2021, I had heard of the name Olivia Rodrigo. Hell, I’ve even seen hee act in some things. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is mainly what I knew her from, and she’s done a pretty good job in that so far. When she truly hit stardom was the very beginning of the year with her debut single “driver’s license.” Arguably the biggest hit of the year so far, it took the world by storm and while I do feel it was a little overplayed, it was a phenomenal first single. She’s kept up the momentum with her latest two singles, “deja vu” and “good 4 u,” so what’s next? A streamlined debut project titled SOUR . If the quality of her first singles is any indication, we’d have something special here. Is SOUR that project? We’ll find out right now.
