Avril Lavigne - Love Sux ALBUM REVIEW
Pretty sure I gotta learn how to skateboard to listen to this now.
The 2000s were truly something else. I was too young to remember a little of it, but there are a couple things that stand out. Since nostalgia typically goes back for two decades, it seems like 2000s style is coming back, especially in the music. We have the good stuff like WILLOW’s last album, and we have the bad stuff like nearly everything Machine Gun Kelly has done within the past two years. One artist that seemed prime for a *huge* career resurgence is Avril Lavigne, where her songs like “Complicated” and “Sk8er Boi” have been etched into the style so much that it’s become that style. Lavigne seems to know this since we have her return to that 2000s pop-punk sound with Love Sux. I haven’t heard any of the singles beforehand, but with MGK and blackbear as features on this, it’s not like I have that high of expectations to begin with. Let’s just get into it.
If you’ve been living under a rock, pop-punk is mainstream again mainly thanks to Olivia Rodrigo. She may not be a pop-punk artist, but I think one of her biggest hits “good 4 u” will have that same nostalgia that “Complicated” will have in twenty years. There have been many artists stepping up to the bat like the aforementioned MGK and even Trippie Redd, and with new artists like Poorstacy, the pop-punk revival is in full force right now. With Lavigne being backed by both Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker on this album (the latter handled the production on nearly every song), this honestly had a chance of working. And against all odds, I actually kind of liked it…? The production’s very clean and it works in most of these songs’ favor, but there’s one thing that just bothered me here: Avril’s voice just seemed robotic for an odd reason. I can’t place a reason why right now, but it just felt off. Outside of Hoppus and Barker, the collaborators didn’t really contribute much. MGK’s and blackbear’s features aren’t good, but I’ve heard much worse from them. Even the writing feels the same from peak 2005, and is that necessarily a bad thing? It’s what I like to get from it, personally, so that wasn’t too bad. Despite everything going against it, Love Sux is pretty fun. The pop-punk revival is here to stay after Avril Lavigne’s massive return.
