Olivia Rodrigo - SOUR ALBUM REVIEW
This might be the best time to say that this album proves Olivia Rodrigo isn’t an industry plant.
Before 2021, I had heard of the name Olivia Rodrigo. Hell, I’ve even seen hee act in some things. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is mainly what I knew her from, and she’s done a pretty good job in that so far. When she truly hit stardom was the very beginning of the year with her debut single “driver’s license.” Arguably the biggest hit of the year so far, it took the world by storm and while I do feel it was a little overplayed, it was a phenomenal first single. She’s kept up the momentum with her latest two singles, “deja vu” and “good 4 u,” so what’s next? A streamlined debut project titled SOUR. If the quality of her first singles is any indication, we’d have something special here. Is SOUR that project? We’ll find out right now.
It’s pretty obvious that Rodrigo is an artist of our generation. There isn’t a concept per se here, but each song has a common theme. This is a breakup album through and through, and if I’m being totally honest, I can pull so many influences from Rodrigo’s style. Avril Lavigne, Lorde, Billie Eilish, and even Ariana Grande at times are pretty obvious influences. The strongest influences here, though, are Lorde and Taylor Swift. Swift is even credited as a writer on “1 step forward, 3 steps back” for a sample from her track “New Year’s Day” from reputation. Now, for Rodrigo herself, her writing is honestly top notch. The pop-punk influences from Hayley Williams shine through on many of the tracks, and honestly, my favorite track has to be a tie between “brutal” and “jealousy, jealousy,” which also happen to be some of my favorite songs of the year so far.
SOUR is the birth of a new pop sensation. Olivia Rodrigo knocks it out of the park with each track vocally and lyrically, and with some pretty tasteful production too. Even with how down the lyrics are, this adds so much color to the mainstream pop world. There is so much talent in her, and she’s with it a doubt created the best pop album of the year. It’ll be hard to top this one.
