CZARFACE & MF DOOM - Super What? ALBUM REVIEW
This just proves how much I miss DOOM, man.
It’s okay if you don’t know who CZARFACE is, so let me update you on that. CZARFACE is a rap supergroup masterminded by 7L and Esoteric. The underground duo formed this group with Wu-Tang Clan member Inspectah Deck for this comic book-sequel persona, very similar to MF DOOM’s aesthetic. They put out a few albums that were okay, but what really caught my attention was CZARFACE Meets Metal Face, an entire album with MF DOOM. That was absolutely insane to hear. A Wu-Tang member with MF DOOM on a whole album? That’s crazy. Now, before the pandemic and DOOM’s sudden passing, they recorded a second album together. Super What? hasn’t seen the light of day until now because of the pandemic, and this is the first posthumous appearance of DOOM on anything since his passing. It’s a big deal, and with that comes high expectations. Did it live up to those expectations? Let’s find out.
As you expect, nearly all of the beats on here are jazzy, chilled, and have a lot of soundbites and samples. It really pains me to say this, but I feel like CZARFACE really outperform DOOM on this project. The trio just give it everything they’ve got, and it’s very fun to hear. It’s also worth noting that whenever DOOM is present, he does knock it out of the park and it’s great to hear him sound this good. I actually think this is the best he’s sounded since BORN LIKE THIS, his final solo album from 2009. The production is fantastic across the board, and it’s honestly a perfect length too. It doesn’t overstay its welcome, mainly because it’s 10 tracks and only about 20 minutes long. If it was any longer, it would’ve gotten stale pretty quickly, and I can always appreciate when artists try to keep it concise with their projects.
Super What? isn’t perfect, but it’s a pretty fun, albeit short, experience. This is one of my favorite CZARFACE albums and it also includes the best batch of verses from MF DOOM in a while. It’s pretty bittersweet knowing that this is most likely the last we’ll hear of DOOM in an album format, but if this really is it, I couldn’t think of a better way for him to go out. This is definitely the most fun I’ve had listening to an album this year.
