King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Live at Red Rocks ‘22 ALBUM REVIEW

Did you know that King Gizz’s discography is the length of two football fields?

How many times have I raved about King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard? Like, I shined praise onto them five times last year alone for all of the projects they dropped. What else can they even do? And yet, they continue to surprise. A huge highlight of not only their 2022 but their careers up to this point is playing three 3-hour shows in a single weekend over at Red Rocks, Colorado. Each of them were completely different sets, and while I was excited to hear about this massive achievement for the group, I’m a broke college student and couldn’t get to Colorado, which I bet I’m not the only one that felt this. However, each show they played has now been released as a massive 86-track, nearly 9-hour box set for the fans to enjoy. It took some time, but I actually listened to the whole thing. Let’s dive into it.

I’ve had to edit this review down a couple of times, but I’ve slowly realized that this is just gonna be a slightly biased review. Only slightly. I’ve only heard a couple of live albums in full, but Live at Red Rocks ‘22 honestly takes the cake. There’s just a certain energy in the shows that’s unmatched throughout the 8-and-a-half hour runtime that I’ve never heard before. My new favorite version of fan favorite “The River” is on this project, the extended jams (too many to name) are absolutely killer across the board, and the fact that there’s at least one song from nearly every album they released is just impressive. It works more like a compilation or a greatest hits but still hits just as hard as three live albums. There’s also this level of chemistry that every band would be jealous of, it’s shocking to see how Gizz hasn’t blown up to be one of the biggest bands in the world. If I’m being honest, it’s a massive triumph for King Gizz and, in my opinion, music in general.

If I didn’t make it clear, I fucking loved Live at Red Rocks ‘22. It would be a landmark achievement for any band to put out a release of this magnitude, but in a huge career of highlights for King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, this might be their biggest achievement yet. I’m confident that this will go down as a historic moment in live music and maybe it won’t ever be topped.
