clipping. - There Existed an Addiction to Blood ALBUM REVIEW

Today’s Halloween, and what a time to review a horrorcore album. Earlier this month, I put up my review of clipping.’s latest album Visions of Bodies Being Burned, and it ended up being a relatively big hit. Many of clipping.’s fans consider this and Visions to be joined at the hip and essentially be a double album, so I decided for the Halloween spirit since I’m not doing too much today, I’ll write a quick review of their first venture into the horror realm, There Existed an Addiction to Blood. No further information is needed if you looked at my Visions review, so let’s just get right into it!

There Existed an Addiction to Blood is a hip-hop record with experimental, horrorcore, noise, and even some ambient vibes in here too. Like Visions, Blood has the overall concept of Halloween and horror movies and fuses them with issues in the world today like racism, police brutality, and gang violence. The ‘gang violence’ tropes are most present on “La Mala Ordina,” which has features from Griselda rappers Benny the Butcher and Elcamino. The track also has additional production from noise artist The Rita, who proves a nearly 90-second section of harsh, mind-blowing noise to cap off the song. I also really like the references to the crime film The Italian Connection that pop up in the track. The lead single “Nothing is Safe” is also a pretty memorable track, with Daveed Diggs’s flow being so menacing that it stops my blood cold. La Chat’s feature on “Run For Your Life” is pretty fun as well. Her role of being a killer on the loose really fits her grimey flow. The tracks “The Show” and “Story 7” are both probably vying for my favorite tracks on the album, though. On “The Show,” Diggs has so much personality and charisma that it’s actually kind of scary. “Story 7” is the latest entry in a theme on most of clipping.’s albums that all have an interconnected story, and it’s really impressive to see how far it’s come along. We also can’t talk about clipping. without the production from William Hutson and Jonathan Snipes. Like past projects, it’s quite experimental with mostly just loud and abrasive noise, shown off on the aforementioned track “La Mala Ordina.” On Blood, though, it’s a lot more accessible while still being out there, if you know what I mean. Visions is definitely more experimental, if you’re into the more experimental stuff.

Overall, There Existed an Addiction to Blood is decent at best. I personally don’t think that it’s as good as Visions of Bodies Being Burned, but it’s still an ambitious undertaking. The only downside I’d say is that the ending track, the 18-minute “Piano Burning” is a little overbearing. It’s literally a piano burning for 18 minutes. Other than that, you should give this a shot.

6/10
