Lil Yachty - Lil Boat 3 ALBUM REVIEW
Lil Yachty has always been a mid-tier artist to me. When he was starting off with breakout mixtape Lil Boat, I thought he was gonna be a pretty fun addition to the rap scene, and for a while, he was. Then, as Yachty became more and more famous, the quality of his music started to go downhill. Lil Boat 2, Nuthin’ 2 Prove, and Teenage Emotions were all a huge drop in quality from his breakout mixtape. Now, this past weekend, Yachty dropped Lil Boat 3, a threequel to his breakout mixtape. The lead single from this, “Oprah’s Bank Account” with DaBaby and Drake, was pretty fun. To me, it sounded like a return to form for Yachty, along with fun contributions from both Drake and DaBaby. Maybe Lil Boat 3 is gonna be a turning point for Yachty, a return to his more impactful and albeit strange early days. Let’s get into it!
Lil Boat 3 is a cloud rap album, like so many of his cohorts and features on this project. And there is a doozy of features on here. They include A$AP Rocky, Tierra Whack, Tyler, The Creator, Future, and Young Thug among various different tracks. The Tokyo Drift-sampling “T.D.” is a posse-cut record of sorts. Yachty is accompanied by Rocky, Tyler, and Tierra on this track, which is the most stacked collaboration on here. And as much talent Rocky and Tyler have, Tierra Whack has the most versatile and quite possibly the best verse on the entire track. Where was Yachty, though? Exactly, he’s forgotten about, and that’s the big problem with Lil Boat 3. This is a Lil Yachty album, but he’s constantly being overshadowed by his features and even some of the beats. I think he’s genuinely giving it all to make each project of his worthwhile, but he’s simply falling behind his peers. At 19 tracks and 54 minutes, this felt like a slog to listen to, and there were great projects out this year that were longer than that.
There are some tracks like the aforementioned “T.D.” and “Pardon Me” with Future that I’ve been going back to since my first listen of Lil Boat 3, and it feels like Yachty is at a crossroads with his career. Since he’s become famous, he’s gone into voice acting, and he did a surprisingly great job as John Stewart/Green Lantern in the Teen Titans GO! movie (which you should watch, honestly). He’s been stepping outside of his comfort zone in everywhere except for his music. I honestly think that Yachty still has one or two more really good projects in him, but it’s apparent that he hasn’t reached that status yet.
Overall, Lil Boat 3 is a fun record, but like a lot of the rap records this year, it’s going to be forgotten about as more projects get released in the coming years. There is a decent amount to like about Lil Boat 3, but if the beats or the features don’t pique your interest, there isn’t a lot to find here.
