Green Day - Father of All Motherfuckers ALBUM REVIEW

Green Day is one of the most iconic alternative bands ever. They have two all-time great albums in the form of Dookie and American Idiot, and are one of the reasons why punk-pop became so mainstream in America. Even with their legacy and impact, everyone has noticed a dip in quality since their 2009 album 21st Century Breakdown. The trilogy of ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! were a big disappointment to me, and I thought of Revolution Radio as the same, but to a lesser degree. Now, four years after Revolution Radio, Green Day is back with Father of All Motherfuckers. Let’s get into it, and trust me, you’ll know right off the bat how I feel about it.

Father of All Motherfuckers is a pop-punk album, now with a tinge of garage rock styles. I mean, if you wanna call this absolute dumpster fire that. The best way to describe this record is that one image of a cardboard sign that says ‘Our expectations were low, but HOLY FUCK!’ The singles leading into this like the title track were not great, but I honestly didn’t expect it to be the best track of the bunch. Now, the marketing for Father of All Motherfuckers has some very heavy boomer energy radiating from it. Billboards across the country said in bold letters ‘NO FEATURES. NO SWEDISH SONGWRITERS. 100% PURE UNCUT ROCK.,’ and it came off as very cringey to me, in my opinion. Father of All Motherfuckers feels very soulless and devoid of any life or creativity. All of these songs feel like rip-offs of something a lot more popular and lightyears better, and that’s severely disappointing. I’d also like to point out that this doesn’t sound like a Green Day record not because of the quality or anything, but Billie Joe Armstrong doesn’t sound like Billie Joe Armstrong. No one in the band sounds like themselves in this. This just feels like a very bad local band that can’t get a gig (but much love to bands like Social Cues and Stop Laughing! in the Cleveland local scene).

Father of all Motherfuckers is the first musical disappointment of 2020 and already a contender for one of the worst albums this year. There’s no creativity, there’s no identity, and most of all, the Green Day that made American Idiot is absolutely nowhere to be found. I will give it one point for the cringey ‘100% PURE UNCUT ROCK’ marketing because it made me laugh, though. Rock music is dead.
