Big Sean - Detroit 2 ALBUM REVIEW
Big Sean has had a bad rap in the music industry. While I believe that he’s a very talented and gifted rapper, he’s always been out of the G.O.A.T. talks because he simply doesn’t have an album that is great. Sure, his first two albums were fun, and Dark Sky Paradise and I Decided. are fine, but it was never really anything to be shocked at. With his latest project, Detroit 2, he’s trying to make that great album that he hasn’t had yet. He definitely has the talent to build up a classic: Post Malone, Anderson .Paak, Young Thug, Travis Scott, and even Earlly Mac appear on this album, among many others. There are even spoken-word tracks from three huge names about their experiences with Sean himself, the city of Detroit, or both. They’re from legendary comedian Dave Chapelle, pioneering singer Erykah Badu, and iconic R&B legend Stevie Wonder. Names like that alone can have the potential to upstage an artist like Sean, but we’ll just have to find out for ourselves. Let’s dive into the world city of Big Sean’s Detroit 2.
Detroit 2 is a hip-hop album. Now, the two singles from this were “Deep Reverence” with the late Nipsey Hussle and “Harder Than My Demons.” Both of those tracks were kinda underwhelming, honestly. It felt like Sean was trying to capitalize off Nipsey’s tragic death, and “Demons” felt like a leftover from his last album. Thankfully, these are the two worst tracks here, so let’s just get into those. Let me just say that this album is REALLY LONG. There are a good amount of tracks that I would cut off like “ZTFO,” “FEED,” and maybe “The Baddest,” but I really love that Godzilla vs. Mothra sample, so I might keep it. The great tracks on here are honestly really great. One of my favorites on here is “Wolves” with Post Malone, although I would’ve had Post Malone do the entire hook because he absolutely kills his verse and the hook when he sings it. “Lithuania” has your typical Travis Scott feature, but it’s a fun time as well. “Guard Your Heart” is also a great track. The combo of Sean, Anderson .Paak, Earlly Mac, and especially Wale is absolutely killer. The true highlight here, though, is the posse cut “Friday Night Cypher.” Tons of artists from Detroit are featured on here. From rising stars like Tee Grizzley, Boldy James, and Kash Doll to some of the best to ever do it like Eminem and Royce Da 5’9”, “Friday Night Cypher” is one of the best songs of 2020 so far.
Even if it is a little bloated, that doesn’t take away from the fact that Detroit 2 is Big Sean’s first truly great project. It’s similar to Logic’s latest album Under Pressure: When it comes to quality, this is a huge step up for Sean. Detroit 2 shows off his chemistry with other artists while he gets to do a little bragging himself. If this is a love letter to the city he loves, I can’t wait to see what happens when he gets into album mode again.
