Tom Holkenborg - Zack Snyder's Justice League (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) ALBUM REVIEW
Wow, the second film score I reviewed. Pretty awesome.
Should this review come with a disclaimer? I actually haven’t seen Zack Snyder’s Justice League yet. I’ve seen some viral clips of it and I definitely plan on seeing it in the future. I’ve enjoyed a good amount of Tom Holkenborg’s score work, and if you don’t recognize his real name, just look up Junkie XL and see his work. I personally think his work on Batman v. Superman with Hans Zimmer is some of the most underappreciated pieces of music in the past five years. Now, after the fabled Snyder Cut debuted on HBO Max last week, Holkenborg released his score for the cut, which was entirely reworked from the original version. Let’s get into this behemoth.
Is it odd to classify this as ‘neoclassical darkwave?’ The music nerd in me kinda jumped out because I was listening to Lingua Ignota while writing this, and I found some similarities when it comes to the sonic tone of this. Some elements from Snyder’s previous DCEU films are here, like the now-iconic Wonder Woman theme and Hans Zimmer’s theme from Man of Steel, and there are some brand new ones here too. Cyborg’s new theme tugs at the heartstrings, Darkseid has a genuinely haunting choir (hence the Lingua Ignota similarities), and Batman has a pretty fucking awesome guitar riff.
The icing on the cake for this project is definitely the track “The Crew at Warpower,” which is essentially the theme of the film. It’s the foundation of the soundtrack, pieces of it being on different sections of the track. It really is one of the best pieces of classical music of the decade so far.
Holkenborg’s work on Zack Snyder’s Justice League has some of his best score work so far. Scenes that felt like a whimper in Josstice League (get it?) seem like they’re so much more hard-hitting with Holkenborg’s score. No marks against Danny Elfman, though, I love his work too. As a movie score nerd, I feel completely spoiled. Just please give this a vinyl release, I beg you.
