Clairo - Immunity ALBUM REVIEW

In the Internet age, anyone can become a star at any moment. They could just have a video or a song that lands with the public, and then they become instantly popular for however long they choose to be. One of those artists was Clairo. The alternative genre isn’t my favorite of all time, but after hearing “Pretty Girl” for the first time, I knew that she was going to be a star. That ended up happening, and with her debut album Immunity, she ended up working with Rostam Batmanglij, a former member of Vampire Weekend, for a majority of the record. So, is Immunity a good debut? Let’s see for ourselves.

Immunity is an alternative album with dream-pop, indie, and electronic influences. The best thing about this record is Clairo’s voice. I’m infatuated with the dreamy vibe and sound that she has, and the instrumentation that’s throughout this album really back my claim up. Yes, this is kind of the samey lo-fi indie songs that could be running rampant on Tumblr, but I feel like this is the most enjoyable batch I’ve heard out of the genre so far. Batmanglij and Clairo are a very good pairing, and quite frankly, might be the best on the alternative scene at the moment. Songs like “Sofia” and “Alewife” are exactly what I like from this sound, and while there can be some improvements on a good majority of the tracks, there’s a lot to like here.

This was a shorter review mainly because my mind was made up about it right when I heard it. Clairo’s debut album Immunity is a showing of the potential of not just Clairo as an artist, but for the genre that it’s in. This was the first main artist I’ve heard of that broke through to the mainstream with this sound in recent memory, and that’s a major achievement, especially for someone at the beginning of their career. Immunity isn’t the best of the lo-fi genre, but it’s a great starting point. I also hope that she gets with Jack Antonoff like Taylor Swift did for folklore in the future.
