Lorne Balfe - Black Widow (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) ALBUM REVIEW
(A/N: I’m already apologizing about all the Skylanders jokes I make in this.)
If you wanna know my thoughts on the movie itself, here’s my review of that: https://youtu.be/Wf9yeXj1Pwk
Some movies didn’t come out last year. It sucked, but we had to understandably wait for some of the bigger films set to release in 2020. Finally, over a year after it was supposed to, the newest Marvel film Black Widow released last week to critical acclaim and box office success. Being connected to the franchise, both personally and quite literally as an actor, I kind of feel obliged for pop culture mediums to collide so I could take a look at the score for the Cate Shortland film. This score’s been composed by Lorne Balfe, who’s done legendary scores like Megamind and every single game in the Skylanders franchise. Outside of that, he scored the latest Mission: Impossible movie, the His Dark Materials series, and even the new sci-fi/action film The Tomorrow War. How did his work for Marvel go? Let’s find out.
Let me just say that right off the bat that this has a very distinct feel out of most of the MCU’s scores, except for Michael Giacchino’s harpsichord-laden work for Doctor Strange. It’s a lot more mature and darker than the past scores in the franchise, but it feels undeniably, and fittingly, Russian. There’s a Russian lullaby that kicks off the score, and that feeling and composition are felt throughout the rest of the album, replicated in an instrumental form as well. I have to say that my two favorite pieces are “Blood Ties,” the most elegant track on the album, and “Yelena Belova,” accompanied by a stirring full orchestra.
It isn’t exactly for everyone and there aren’t moments that jump out like some other scores in the franchise, but Lorne Balfe has done a pretty fantastic job for Black Widow. It’s by far his best work for film. I cannot say best overall because he’s done the Skylanders franchise’s music and His Dark Materials, but his ominous take on Natasha Romanoff is a distinct score in a world of (sometimes) generic scores, as much as I love this franchise. This is terrific.
