Lingua Ignota - Sinner Get Ready ALBUM REVIEW

I cannot express enough how terrifying this woman is to me. For those that don’t know, that is a positive.

Kristin Hayter, known professionally as Lingua Ignota, is someone I’ve had trouble explaining why she’s one of my favorite artists. It’s not every day that your parents ask you what you’re listening to and you answer with “DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR” or All Bitches Die, the name of her breakout album. Hell, I actually credit her for why I decided I wanted to write about music like this. Her last album, the mind-blowing and all-too-real CALIGULA, is a devastating look into abuse and misogyny. In her own words, she stated that CALIGULA takes the listener “through a cycle of abuse," along with looking at "abusive power, madness, depravity, narcissism” that are prevalent in politics and communities alike. I could write a college paper on how visceral CALIGULA is just from Hayter’s lyrics alone, but now, we look to the future. Her newest release, Sinner Get Ready, is here and as one of the most compelling and forward-thinking artists in the experimental genre, this is an album I’ve been waiting a year and a half for. That doesn’t happen often. So, let’s not waste any more time and get ready for Sinner Get Ready.

First, let’s talk about this album’s soundscape. It’s quite different from the dark, distorted, and noise that covered her last album. The production on here is turned down quite a bit, almost minimal. The electronic portions are replaced by so many live instruments that I can’t count them right off the top of my head without sounding deranged. This works perfectly, with Hayter’s classically-trained opera voice being an instrument of its own with how versatile it is across this album. Even when it isn’t loud when it comes to the decibels, the impact is just as great. Her writing, which mainly touches on how much of a hold Christianity has on most parts of rural Pennsylvania, is just as heart-wrenching as before, but with the new production, it feels even more amplified and as compelling as ever.

Finally, the potential has shown. Lingua Ignota is a once-in-a-lifetime artist and writer, and Sinner Get Down is the proof of that. Even if this is more stripped back than CALIGULA, Kristen Hayter is a force of nature. I feel incredibly lucky that I’ve been able to sit here and see her grow and add more and more to her masterful discography. I tried to get ready for Hayter, but no one in their right mind would be prepared for anything like this.
