Baby Keem - The Melodic Blue ALBUM REVIEW
Top of the morning.
So, you may be on the same page as me that I was on a few weeks ago. Who is Baby Keem? Well, he’s a California rapper and producer. He also happens to be the cousin of Kendrick Lamar, and he’s had pretty eventful past weeks. The most recent single from this album, “family ties” featuring Lamar, made huge waves with it being Kendrick’s comeback, but along with that, Baby Keem ended up holding his own against him. In the past week, he also appeared on Kanye West’s last album, Donda, absolutely killing the song he was featured on. Now, he’s taking advantage of the opportunity and dropping his debut album, The Melodic Blue. Along with three Kendrick Lamar features, it also features Don Toliver and Travis Scott. Having heard all the excitement around this, I’m pretty hyped to see what’s in store. Let’s get into The Melodic Blue.
I can say right off the bat that Keem knows how to make a catchy song. Even if the track “pink panties” isn’t my favorite song off it, I can’t deny how catchy it is and that it proved that he can do this pop-R&B fusion. On top of that, he has such a great personality. He always keeps your attention while he’s rapping, and just when you think he’s about to lose you, he takes a new inflection on his voice and reels you back in. He’s really leaning into the more ridiculous side of himself and he’s completely aware of that. That’s why I think it works so well. He also knows who he works well with. Obviously, his collaborations with Kendrick were good, even if Kenny took some inspiration from JackSepticEye on his “range brothers” feature. His tracks with Don Toliver and Travis Scott were pretty good, and I was pleasantly surprised by the tiny ROSALÍA appearance too. It’s also great to see that Keem produced this entire album, and it overall sounds pretty good too.
I guess the word isn’t experimental, but Baby Keem’s breakout album is all over the place. The Melodic Blue is, simply put, a fun album. Keem’s energy is off the charts, and like the past, he holds his own against some of the most popular artists working right now. I also think his writing is at its peak and even if it isn’t my favorite album of this year, I can really admire this album for how versatile it is and it could really cement Baby Keem as a star.
