Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings: The Album ALBUM REVIEW
If you wanna watch my review of the movie, click this link!
You know how Top Dawg Entertainment did a soundtrack to Black Panther and it was a massive hit? Well, Marvel is seeing if lightning can strike twice with their newest film (and one of their best yet), Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. This time around, Marvel has tapped 88Rising, a label that has many Asian American and Asian artists. They have a good lineup like Rich Brian, NIKI, Warren Hue, and the Higher Brothers, but the label’s biggest star, Joji, is oddly absent from this album. There are also the non-label artists here and a star-studded lineup from Swae Lee, Jhene Aiko, 21 Savage, Anderson .Paak, Guapdad 4000, Earthgang, Rick Ross, DJ Snake, and Saweetie. Even the lead actor of the film, Simu Liu, has an appearance and a song on his own. So, is this album even worth listening to? Does my MCU bias get the best of me? Let’s get into it and find out.
Alright, this is gonna be a shorter review for a couple reasons. I really don’t have much to say on soundtracks like this mainly because it’s a collection of songs made for a movie, it’s not gonna be a masterpiece, save for some pretty huge examples. That little piano loop heard in the trailers comes from “Lazy Susan” with 21 Savage, Rich Brian, Warren Hue, and MaSiWei, and it’s an absolute banger and is probably the best song off this album. You can’t go wrong with a little Anderson .Paak, with his song “Fire in the Sky” being the “All the Stars” of the movie since it’s in the end credits. Honestly, that’s pretty much all I got out of this album. Sure, there are fans of the other songs, but the best songs are in the movie. The movie’s great too and is definitely worth seeing in theaters, so you’ll hear those songs there. Just save the songs you like. One more thing, the album cover is sick as fuck and I just might get the vinyl for this reason alone. Another thing to add, Simu Liu has a pretty nice singing voice and would have probably been a fun pop star in an alternate universe. Maybe we’ll see that in the multiverse…
Cool/10
