JPEGMAFIA - LP! ALBUM REVIEW

I’m fully aware that there are two versions of this album, an online and offline version. This will cover the offline version, which is found on YouTube, Soundcloud, and Bandcamp. The Bandcamp link will be below so you can support JPEGMAFIA directly. If you wish to listen to the online version, it can be found on all streaming services. Also, happy belated birthday, Peggy πŸ’•

Barrington Hendricks, more widely known as JPEGMAFIA, has been one of the most prolific artists working in the underground now. At this point, should he be considered underground because of how popular he’s become? I’ve been a fan of his since Black Ben Carson dropped in 2016, but after hearing his projects under the DeVon Hendryx name (especially The Ghost~Pop Tape), I thought he was a force to be reckoned with in experimental rap. I’d write something up about how LP! is his fourth studio album and his final with his label, Republic, but I’ll actually use his own words from the Bandcamp page of this album to tell you how much I admire him as an artist: “I don’t make music for dickriders, I don’t make music for casuals, theres plenty of wanna be ass n****s to fill that void for u, if u just need some bullshit to put on in the background, while u do dishes or whatever. but I’m just not here for that. me and my fans, we like detail. so if your not actually good at what u do. we don't care. i understand that in this day and age a black man being great at what he does consistently is just not enough for some.” Let’s get into LP!.

Like most of his other projects, this album here is mind-blowingly experimental. Even for Peggy, who’s had some of the most ‘out there’ projects in recent memory, this is unfamiliar territory to me. A huge part of this, and possibly my favorite, is how elements of some of his past albums come together on this album. The industrial and jarring sounds of Veteran, the futuristic pop of AMHAC, and the variedness of his two EP! releases all gel so flawlessly. It’s actually quite scary. As always, the entire album is produced by, mixed, and mastered by Peggy himself, so there’s even more talent showing through. When it comes to his writing, he’s on a new level, still being cynical and funny, which makes him stand out as one of the best writers in the game right now. If you cannot tell already, I loved LP!. Against all odds, JPEGMAFIA seems to be getting better and better with each album he releases, and LP! is another high watermark in a career already chock full of them. Never change, Peggy.
