Migos - Culture III ALBUM REVIEW

No matter what how I feel about this album, I’ll stand by this statement: This cover art is atrocious.

Contrary to popular belief, I’ve actually really missed Migos for these past few years. When they officially got on my radar with 2017’s Culture, it felt like a breath of fresh air that trap really needed. It was essentially an ‘all killer, no filler’ attitude that hasn’t really been shown in trap yet, and honestly, hasn’t been shown in that capacity and done this well since then. It’s one of my favorite trap albums ever, and they just had to fuck it up a year later with Culture II, and god this was bad. It felt like a mixtape that definitely shouldn’t have been Culture II. Now, three years later, Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff are back with Culture III, and even if it isn’t that ‘all killer, no filler’ output this time, I’m still excited for them taking time to see if this could replicate at least half of that quality met, which wasn’t met on II. Okay, we’ve heard enough. Let’s get into Culture III.

Oddly, I still have the same problem with this that I have with Culture II. There are some pretty good songs on here like “Vaccine,” “Avalanche,” and even “Need It” with Youngboy Never Broke Again, but there are also some that just aren’t needed and find it boring to listen to. It’s definitely not to the extent of II, mainly because the songs on here are just so much more enjoyable. The trio sounds hungry on this, back from hibernating for three years and it just works now. Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff has insane chemistry throughout this entire thing, and nearly all of them have improved in some type of way. Quavo was in this very weird slump for the past couple of years, but his hooks and verses are very enjoyable here. Takeoff goes so insane on literally every verse he has, and because of that, he’s finally getting the recognition he deserves in the group. Offset, in my opinion, never really fell off in the first place, so it was just nice for him to do what he does best. Oh, and the Justin Bieber hook on “What You See” is the best he’s sounded in at least 6 years, and somehow wipes away the bad taste that his gospel EP from a few months ago left in my mouth. I’ve also noticed something about these tracks. Their breakout song, “Bad and Boujee,” didn’t have Takeoff on it. Ever since then, each member has been on each song. I respect that fully, mainly because I think that Takeoff is my favorite member.

While it still does have some flaws, Culture III is a pretty good return to form for Migos. Yes, it’s still boring in some spots, but none of it’s genuinely horrible like the majority of Culture II. I’ll personally return to only three or four songs off this, but that’s certainly better than the zero of their last album. I’m glad to see that they’re back in quality form, and hopefully, they can continue to keep this pace up.
