MIKE - Disco! ALBUM REVIEW

I fully understand that the album cover’s low quality for a reason, but it just works.

Bronx rapper MIKE has been an artist that’s always stood out to me. His very laidback delivery with morbid and depressive lyrics can be matched with Earl Sweatshirt’s newest output, but while some people think MIKE is taking from Earl, it’s actually the other way around. His last album, weight of the world, was one of my favorite rap albums of 2020, and a year to the day, he’s back with his seventh album overall, Disco!. I really wasn’t expecting any major switch-ups in sound or lyrics, but we only have one feature on here and that comes in the form of Sideshow, who recently made a good contribution to The Alchemist’s latest EP, This Thing of Ours. Once again, it’s entirely produced by MIKE under the dj blackpower moniker, and that pretty much sums up my expectations. Is Disco! another record under MIKE’s belt? Let’s see.

When it comes to the production, it’s a lot more abstract and his least accessible project yet, even if his most accessible tracks appear on here like the singles, “Evil Eye” and “Crystal Ball.” It’s very reminiscent of MF DOOM’s production, especially with all these different samples and the lo-fi aesthetic. That’s always been there for MIKE’s releases, but it seems like it’s been turned up to an 11 on this album. His writing is still top-notch, but it’s not as in-your-face obvious as it has been in his past projects. The focal point here is his flows and his overall performances, and those are knockouts across the board. Also, I’d love to point out the transitions on this album. They’re pretty great, especially from “tailwind” to “Airdrop,” that shit sent me.

I’m pretty satisfied by this, honestly. MIKE has been slowly building one of the most consistent discographies in the rap game right now, and Disco! extends that run up to seven albums. You can tell the amount of care that’s put into this album, and because of that, this is my favorite MIKE album and definitely a contender for my favorite rap album of the year so far.
