King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Butterfly 3000 ALBUM REVIEW

I may be wrong, but I think they like butterflies.

For being around for a little under a decade, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are pretty prolific. Since their inception, they’ve put out seventeen albums. That’s a very big album, and admittedly, there’s not a bad one among them. That’s very impressive, and quite frankly, I always take a look whenever they drop. Speaking of, they dropped an album earlier this year called L.W., and it was kind of forgettable. It was cool, but since it was a sister piece to last year’s K.G., it didn’t feel like a new trek into a new sound, which is what they’re usually known for. Now, for this next album here, Butterfly 3000, they’re back to their old habits by not having a habit at all. This time around, they boldly go to a new sound: psychedelic pop. Interestingly enough, leading up to this, there was no tracklist, cover, or single for it, so we’re going in blind on this one. So, let’s not waste any more time and get into Butterfly 3000.

Damn, this thing is pretty breezy. I really did not expect that to be a word that describes a King Gizzard album. I don’t wanna call it background music, but it really seems like that at first listen. I’d have to say my favorite track off this was “Shanghai,” honestly. The hook is pretty catchy and the song is cheerful overall. Also, there’s a lot of synth on here. Like, A LOT OF SYNTH. I’d even say that they’re the star of the show here. There’s still that acoustic guitar laden throughout the project, but it’s mainly the synths. The lyrics are even a bit poetic, I think they are. There isn’t exactly a concept in this album like some of their past albums, but maybe someday, we’ll find the hidden concept here.

After a few listens of this, I can say that this is definitely one of my favorite King Gizzard albums so far. Butterfly 3000 is a sudden change of pace for the group, and that’s saying something for a group with 18 albums. While I’ll probably go back to their more concept-heavy and just heavier-sounding music in general, Butterfly 3000 is certainly something worth checking out.
