DaBaby - My Brother’s Keeper (Long Live G) EP REVIEW
(Author’s Note: If you or someone you know are having suicidal thoughts, please call 1-800-273-8255. You have to know that there’s someone in your life that cares about you.)
This is a bit more somber review this time around. DaBaby’s older brother, Glenn Johnson, recently took his own life. It was a tragic moment that shook the hip-hop community to its core. DaBaby stayed relatively quiet on the situation other than tweeting out a brief message honoring him, and it was understandable. A few weeks later, he announced that he made a song honoring his brother, and that it would release that Friday. Instead, a whole EP dropped, titled My Brother’s Keeper (Long Live G). This was made to honor Johnson and act as a final goodbye from his younger brother. Let’s get into it.
My Brother’s Keeper (Long Live G) is a hip-hop EP with trap undertones. Other than past projects, this EP has a sadder atmosphere, and rightfully so. Songs like the title track and “Shanyah” are so heartfelt and you can tell that he’s putting everything he can to making sure that these are great tracks, and they’re both emotional moments on the album. “Bidness” with Toosii is a gospel-tinged track, and Baby’s flow is killer here. The features on here really boost the album too. Meek Mill gives a great performance on “8 Figures” and Polo G and NoCap do their thing on “Handgun” too. I think the best track on here is the closer, “More Money More Problems.” This sounds so incredible to me. Everything about this just lines up. The callback to the “ROCKSTAR” sample, his flow switch-ups, his lyrics. This is by far my favorite track from DaBaby.
My Brother’s Keeper (Long Live G) is a huge step up in DaBaby’s career so far. This is the first time I’ve felt any attachment from DaBaby’s music, and he’s a really engaging performer if he puts his energy in the right place. Along with that, it’s very effective in honoring his late brother Glenn Johnson. This was a tough way to end this review because while the passing of his brother is very tragic, it birthed his best music yet. So, all I’ll say is that I send my prayers to Jonathan Kirk, his family, and his friends during this time of mourning.
7/10
