NLE Choppa - From Dark to Light ALBUM REVIEW
Surprise drops have been gaining more popularity, and for some artists, they can be out of character, especially for rappers these days. NLE Choppa just did this with his new mixtape From Dark to Light, which I’ll be talking about here, but first, we’re gonna need a little context. When he dropped his debut album Top Shotta in August, I didn't cover it, but I was very surprised about it. It didn’t have to be 20 tracks, but Choppa was a very entertaining performer on there, and his voice canceled out the generic beats. Between then and now, he changed up his personality a bit. He’s preaching positivity and his so-called ‘spiritual awakening’ has really affected his image, even creating a separate YouTube channel that acts as an outlet for his new preachings. He also promised a ‘woke’ project, and From Dark to Light is that project. That’s enough context for you, so let’s just get right into it!
From Dark to Light is a hip-hop album with trap influences. Now, I can commend him for following through on his promise of his ‘woke’ turn. The track “Bryson” is a great example of this, but in that area, that’s pretty much where it stops. Outside of this project, it seems like he’s genuine about this, and while he may be, there are still tracks on here that have to do with his ventures before his alleged awakening. There’s also a lot of anti-Covid bars on here that are just very immature, and that just makes it very uncomfortable. When I stated that his performances were pretty entertaining on Top Shotta, that sadly doesn’t translate to this new project here. He just sounds bored out of his mind on here, and the beats don’t even help it. To make matters even worse, all of the positivity tracks seemed incredibly forced. While I thought it was genuine during the lead-up to the project, it now just seems like a ploy to stay relevant. There’s not much else to say about this project because it’s so surface level. You get everything out of it once you listen to it.
The last sentence pretty much sums up what I think about From Dark to Light. It’s very unoriginal and bland, and I honestly think that NLE Choppa is just trying to stay relevant and push a different kind of personality. He’s doing that relatively well, but it should at least translate into better music, especially not this project right here.
