Megan Thee Stallion - Good News ALBUM REVIEW
Megan Thee Stallion is one of the biggest breakout stars of 2020. With “Savage” and its remix from Beyoncé to the cultural watermark of “WAP” with Cardi B, Meg has been on a roll this year. This right here, Good News, is her debut album. After putting out mixtapes Tina Snow and Fever, this is the bow on top of a record year. There’s honestly no introduction needed for Meg, so let’s just get right into it!
Good News is a hip-hop album with trap and R&B influences. Now, I should mention Meg’s technical prowess first. There’s no doubting her talent as a rapper. On many songs, she has memorable flows mixed with witty writing to boot. Combined with explosive confidence and charisma, it’s a killer combo for success. This brought her to the mainstream media in a huge way. On Good News in particular, she reminds me of Missy Elliot more than her peers like Nicki Minaj or Cardi B, and that shows a lot on the tracks “Circles” and the City Girls team-up “Do It On The Tip.” But after the big Tory Lanez controversy, we knew that she was going to respond in some way. That was addressed in the opener, “Shots Fired,” which is a slick diss track that is a damn near-perfect opener. The production is kind of bland most of the time, but there are pretty creative things in the beats here and there. The features on here are okay, I guess. They never really add to the album as a whole to me, but I see them as a way of ‘Hey, I’m a big star. Let’s get someone like DaBaby or 2 Chainz to prove it!’ Another way to describe Good News is that it’s a double-bladed sword. When there’s a “Shots Fired” or a “Circles,” there’s a “Body” and a “Movie.” The highest highs come with the lowest lows on this album, and “Body” is genuinely one of the worst songs I’ve heard this year. This chorus is so grating, I came very VERY close to skipping it. Also, the tracks “Intercourse” and “Don’t Rock Me To Sleep” just seem very forced to me.
The debut album from Megan Thee Stallion is… disappointing. Yes, the makings of a star and the reasons why she became one are all over Good News, but that flair that made Meg a star seems somewhat absent here. I’ll go back to the highlights, but it’s so half and half that it’s kind of shocking.
