Kylie Minogue - Disco ALBUM REVIEW

2020 has been the year of the disco revival. Artists like Dua Lipa (Future Nostalgia), Jessie Ware (What’s Your Pleasure?), Róisín Murphy (Róisín Machine), and even Tame Impala (The Slow Rush) have been able to bring back the disco sound to mostly positive results. Now, over thirty years into her career, Kylie Minogue has decided to jump into this revival with the self-aware title of Disco. This is the Australian pop legend’s fifteenth studio album, and with the old-is-new run of albums that have permeated 2020, I can’t wait to take another dive into the sound again. Not a giant intro, so let’s just get into Disco.

Disco is, you guessed it, a disco album with dance and pop vibes. Damn, this is a cool album. If this album came out in the 70s, it’d be dominating the charts. Out of the disco revival albums that came out this year, Kylie’s take on it sounds the most authentic. This is a fancy, luxurious experience that’s really fun. The production is the highlight for me, really highlighting nostalgia for a time that I wasn’t even around for. Like the other albums from 2020 in this style, it’s not really a jaw-dropping album. What the production does really well, though, is complementing Kylie’s voice. For someone doing this type of sound for the first time, this is very impressive to me. The song “Real Groove” is a clear highlight to me. God, that bassline is so good. Most of these songs are also pretty good, and I didn’t outright hate any of the songs here. The lyrics are catchy as hell too, and that just makes a fun album. What makes this separate from other similar albums is that this just doesn’t sound like a gimmick. This sounds like the album that Kylie was going to make, even if this trend didn’t happen. Also, the first three tracks “Magic,” “Miss a Thing,” and the previously mentioned “Real Groove” is a great way to open an album. Start taking notes on that, Dua.

Disco has a lot of energy going for it, and it proves that Kylie Minogue still has a lot of gas in the tank for the late stages of her career. Is this a masterpiece? Not at all, but the ear-grabbing disco formula is translated for the modern age pretty well here. While I personally prefer Future Nostalgia for that new disco sound, Disco is a pretty good attempt at it and will stay in my rotation for quite a while.
