Trippie Redd's Pegasus AIN'T IT, CHIEF
Hear me out for a second. I like Trippie Redd. I personally think that Life’s A Trip is pretty great and shows off his versatility very well. Since then, he’s been on a bit of a decline. His following project, !, has some decent tracks, but there’s so much filler on there that it nearly cancels out all the good things about it. I can give some points to !, though, for creating a decent vibe and it at least sounded good. The production was nice, even if his lyrics were a little on the basic side. The quality kind of came up on last year’s A Love Letter To You 4, but that really wasn’t anything special, either. Now, we’ve come to Pegasus, his often teased project that was preceded with the masterpiece of an EP, Spooky Sounds. It’s quite literal, believe it or not. Now, just in time for Halloween, we have his newest project. Let’s dive right into Pegasus.
Pegasus is a hip-hop album with trap, pop, and R&B influences. Alright, here comes the barrage. WHY DOES THIS HAVE TO BE 26 TRACKS??? Oh my God, this was such a slog to get through! Also, this is such an eclectic features list. They all seem to overshadow him, though. Future, Young Thug, Busta Rhymes, and fucking Lil Mosey outshine Trippie on these songs, and along with that, Sean Kingston has decided to make his comeback be on this album. Sheesh. Anyway, I guess the less-bad songs are the ones that I least expected to like. The song with Rich the Kid is kinda catchy, honestly. The track “Personal Favorite” is actually pretty heartfelt, and one of the only tracks that I’d go back to, even if I do that at all. The lyrics on here are laughable, and I mean that in the worst way possible. I did laugh at the bar “I just flew two bitches in from overseas/They both from Portugal, they both Portuguese” pretty hard, though. Yes, Trippie, Portuguese people are from Portugal. That’s how it works. There are more lyrical gems in here, but this definitely takes the cake. What really makes this album bad is, as I said earlier, this is 26 tracks long. That’s over 70 minutes of Trippie Redd. I was so tired after listening to Pegasus that I might’ve honestly fallen asleep during the first listen, I’m not entirely sure.
Pegasus is a showcase of Trippie Redd’s subpar consistency. Yes, he has a very unique voice and has shown us before that he can make good or sometimes great projects like Life’s A Trip, but he’s not really an ‘album’ kind of guy. Like !, this is way too long of a project and there are too many fallings in the tracklist. What makes Pegasus his worst project, though, is something really special. It seems like Trippie doesn’t even care about the quality of his songs anymore. If he can hit a certain vibe with one song, he’s trying to recreate it the whole rest of his career, and Pegasus is the worst parts of Trippie Redd put into an album. Anything to get those streams, right?
I just contacted Chief, and he says that Trippie Redd’s Pegasus AIN’T IT.
