Conway the Machine - La Maquina ALBUM REVIEW
I swear to god if Westside Gunn starts rapping over trap beats…
Yep, I’m talking about Griselda again. Conway the Machine has always been one of the more consistent members of the label, and while Griselda has always been quantity over quality, both Benny and Conway have kind of been the opposite of that. Conway is starting to drop more, and while I do like Conway and is most likely my favorite member of the label, it’s set that he’s dropping at least three albums this year. His first album, the Big Ghost Ltd.-produced IF IT BLEEDS IT CAN BE KILLED, was one of the first great projects of 2021, and his upcoming Shady Records debut God Don’t Make Mistakes is still set to release some time this year. The semi-surprise release, La Maquina, certainly came out of nowhere to me, and like most Griselda projects, I made it a point to wait until the full album was out to listen to the singles. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s actually get into it.
Unlike IF IT BLEEDS, which had more grimey and, for the lack of a better term, dusty production, La Maquina takes a more commercial approach. Yes, it’s still dusty, but it has those trap influences, sort of like how Benny the Butcher’s Plugs I Met 2 from last month was. Up-and-comers Jae Skeese and 7xvethegenius have pretty good features on here, but there are some damn good names on here. 2 Chainz, JID, Ludacris, and Elcamino all give pretty great guest verses. Of course, Benny and Westside Gunn appear in a pretty strong closing track, and as always, it’s fireworks. The consistency they all have together is pretty insane and is unmatched by anyone else in the game right now.
After seeing that this was being released, I got worried about Conway oversaturating the market, but if the quality matches La Maquina and IF IT BLEEDS IT CAN BE KILLED, I won’t be worried about oversaturation. This is yet another quality release from the Griselda label and from Conway himself. While this isn’t the best project that both Conway and Griselda have, it’s still well worth your time.
