Miguel - Art Dealer Chic Vol. 4 EP REVIEW
I am one of the three things in the title of this project.
Miguel has really been one of the most underappreciated artists for the past decade. His three previous albums have been some of my favorite R&B projects, especially Wildheart. What had gotten him famous was an EP series called Art Dealer Chic, three small projects that led to his debut, Kaleidoscope Dream. Now, quite a while after the last installment, we have the fourth volume of the Art Dealer Chic series, and it’s pretty exciting to hear this come out. Since it’s only four tracks long, this is gonna be a somewhat shorter review, so let’s not waste any more time.
The opening track “Funeral” reminds me of beats that the late producer SOPHIE would make, and that’s in very high regard. It’s very VERY sexual, and Miguel’s voice fits this very electronic beat surprisingly well. “Triangle Love” is about, well, a love triangle, and while it’s a fine R&B track, it ends with a Julia Roberts sample, which I cannot place which movie it’s from. If you know, comment below what it is. The other two tracks take a calmer approach to the topic of love, where “Thinking Out Loud” ends up being a song about spending more time with his loved ones, maybe because of a certain pandemic. The closing track “So I Lie” mainly stands out because of its production because Miguel just doesn’t do anything that impresses me here or that doesn’t rehash something from the earlier tracks.
I know that was very to-the-point, but Art Dealer Chic Vol. 4 is a pretty good return to the series. Miguel has pretty much always had a good sense of what he’s good at, and this EP is a good showcase of that. If there was a full-length album like this, though, it’d be incredible. I definitely think this is a good R&B project and it’s worth a listen, but it won’t go down as a highlight of Miguel’s already stellar career.
